National Apprenticeship Week looks at the benefits of apprenticeships for both employees and the company they’re working for. The theme for this year’s National Apprenticeship Week (8th – 14th February) is ‘Build the Future’, looking at how employers train, keep and retain apprentices with a specific focus on remote and virtual working during the current pandemic. We asked one of our new apprentices, Luke, about why he became an apprentice and what he’s most looking forward to in his role:

Luke Bryson, IT Apprentice

Why did an apprenticeship appeal to you?

I decided to do an apprenticeship because although my superiors always wanted me to take the route of further education, I simply felt it wasn’t for me and it was time to find my passion in a role where I can mature and grow as a person whilst gaining valuable qualifications and life-skills. An apprenticeship isn’t the best option for everyone, but when it’s for a company such as Assura, the future prospects and everyday lessons are very exciting.

How are you finding starting a job virtually?

I’m actually enjoying the process of working virtually – it’s a new experience for me and grants a level of independence and self-motivation that can sometimes be hard to find in new roles. Working remotely has given me the chance to immerse myself within the role, as I can really get into a focused and concentrated mindset when working independently.

What are you hoping to learn here?

During my role, I hope to gain valuable everyday like skills, mature as a person and gain additional knowledge from more experienced individuals who can guide me in the right direction. I’m also hoping to widen my knowledge of IT and grow my passion for technology while also improving my interpersonal and communication skills.

What would you say to someone thinking of doing an apprenticeship?

You have to ask yourself if you are looking for the mix of work/education that an apprenticeship can offer - if not, a full-time job or full-time education might be the better option for you. If you do want this conjunction of work life and education, then I would say that you should definitely pursue it. You also need to ask yourself if you’re willing to go the extra mile with your education because it will make your life easier when working for your employer and in the future, you will reap the benefits.
