Perched overlooking the Menai Strait in North Wales, in the village of Y Felinheli, this is a primary care centre with an outlook like no other. Opened in May 2013, the building created the space for a local GP surgery to move from cramped premises into a site made for modern healthcare.

The building has been sensitively designed to blend in with the adjacent parkland and features timber cladding to the external walls and biodiversity roof sown with wildflowers and grasses. The building was completed to BREEAM Excellent standard and includes air source heat pumps and a landscaped sustainable drainage wetland area.

In the NHS's 70th year, the health service also marked the fortieth anniversary of a pioneering procedure which changed the lives of millions of people around the world. The first IVF baby, Louise Brown, arrived in 1978 in Oldham. Four decades later, a fertility centre born out of that first success was itself seeking to grow.
