Work to build a new medical centre in Newbiggin Hall has officially begun despite the challenges of a national lockdown.
The development will create a new building on the corner of Trevelyan Drive and Newbiggin Lane, to house all services from the current Newbiggin Hall branch surgery building and provide extra back office space for the whole practice with 38,000 patients set to benefit from the new centre.
Dr Samantha Graham, GP Senior Partner, said: “With a growing population in Newcastle demand on our practices has drastically increased and this new building will lead to better outcomes for our staff and patients. We cannot wait to set foot in our new building and provide more services to our community.”
The works are essential to alleviate pressure at Saville Place and offer the potential to reconfigure those premises to add even more clinical space.
Andy Cooper, our senior development manager, said: “I’m delighted that we have finally been able to make a start on this development. The practice needs a bigger building more suited to the number of patients already registered. The designs look fantastic, and we cannot wait to bring a modern medical centre to the area.”
The new multi-purpose building will operate as a hub for the Saville Medical Practice and other local practices in the area.
The scheme has the support of Newcastle City Council who made land available as part of the Newbiggin Hall estate redevelopment, and the new medical centre forms an important piece of the wider community regeneration scheme to create new homes and retail units.
It is estimated that the building will take approximately 12 months to complete.
