Living with long-term conditions is challenging enough without having to travel long distances for treatments like regular renal dialysis. But until recently, that was the prospect facing many patients in Durham, who would make the journey to Sunderland, Bishop Auckland, Shotley Bridge or Sacriston for a range of NHS treatments as facilities weren't available for them in communities in the north west of the country.
