The importance of closer working between housing, health and social care organisations should form a key part of a new national strategy for older people’s housing, according to MPs.
The Communities and Local Government Select Committee has published its report on the challenges of providing appropriate housing for older people, which includes recommendations that housing services should take equal status to health and social care in Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships, and that government should monitor impact of this in STP and ACS (Accountable Care System) plans.
We welcome the committee’s findings – one of the key considerations in housing for older people should be its location in relation to primary care. With more people living longer and a greater proportion of people living with complex, long-term conditions, reliance on health services is increasing and access to primary care must be in the right places and spaces, particularly for older patients who rely on it the most.
