A ground-breaking new eye health clinic has opened at our North Ormesby Health Village.
Newmedica has opened its doors with the aim of improving eye health services in the community and helping to reduce waiting times for people needing essential NHS treatment for sight-loss conditions.
The centre serves Teeside and other surrounding areas. It has three consultancy rooms, three treatment rooms and one theatre equipped with the latest ophthalmology technology.
Teeside Newmedica has already delivered over 1,000 appointments and surgical procedures for patients with a range of eye health conditions, including cataract, ocular hypertension, oculoplastic surgery and glaucoma.
Darshak Shah, Managing Director at Newmedica said: “Eye operations don’t necessarily need to be in big hospitals, which is why we have created this specialist unit. It is the first integrated eye clinic and surgical centre we have established, with an outpatient’s department and an operating theatre under one roof. We are very proud of our new facility, and the team are working fantastically hard to ensure each patient receives the best care.”
Patients can be referred to the centre at the North Ormesby Health Village by their GP or optician. They are typically seen within two weeks with surgery normally taking place two weeks after that, reducing wait times and worry.
An official opening ceremony was attended by councillors from Middlesbrough Council as well as one of the new centre’s very first patients, Joan Breeze, who cut the ribbon.
Simon Oborn, our Head of Portfolio Management, said: “Using our buildings to help patients reach extra health services alongside general practice is the very core of what we do. With the right primary care spaces, there’s huge potential to make it easier for patients to get the care they need, closer to home – and to help GPs to build their partnerships with other clinicians and services.”
