New primary care centre in St Leonards starts on site
07 Aug 2019

Building work on our brand-new medical centre in West St Leonards officially got underway this week.

The purpose-built medical centre is being built on Bexhill Road in St Leonards and will provide new accommodation for the Carisbrooke Surgery – which is currently operating from portacabins following a fire at its former premises – and the Silver Springs Medical Practice branch site of the High Glades Medical Centre with patients from both practices accessing primary care services at the new site.

The scheme, backed by Hastings and Rother CCG, is funded by ourselves and delivered by Till Developments. It will become a health hub for over 19,000 local patients.

The three-storey building, being constructed by locally-based Westridge Construction, is due to complete in autumn 2020 and will provide Carisbrooke and Silver Spring patients with additional space, facilities and an onsite pharmacy on the ground floor. The new centre will include 26 consulting rooms, six treatment rooms and a training suite.

Nick MacCarthy, Senior Partner at Carisbrooke surgery, said: “This new building is about looking to the future – moving from premises which currently can’t deliver the services and experience we want for our patients, to a state-of-the-art home for primary care in our community.”

Liam MacCarthy, Director at Till Developments, said: “We set out to develop a modern facility, the best health facility in Hastings, and after two years working on the project are excited that construction is now underway. We are incredibly proud of this building and trust that the patients who come here will be too.”

David Warden, Clinical Chair of NHS Hastings and Rother Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “This is a fantastic new development that will improve access to health and care services for people in St Leonards. It is great that the Carisbrooke Surgery team will have a permanent home, and all patients using the new medical centre will benefit from the additional space and facilities.”

Ashley Seymour, our Senior Development Manager, said: “We are delighted to be forward-funding our first scheme in Sussex and working with a new development partner, Till, to deliver this much-needed new healthcare facility for the patients and practice teams.”

Andy Batsford, lead councillor for housing said: “One of the real concerns that local residents in West St Leonards raise with me when talking about new housing developments and welcoming new local families into their communities is one of social infrastructure: doctor’s surgeries, family medical support and health care.

“So, we are delighted that the new multi surgery and health care centre is underway and being built where it is needed, to support the existing residents and the exciting developments planned in West St Leonards, front loading the infrastructure and ensuring sustainable communities into the future.”
