
The select committee for communities and local government has just completed its inquiry into housing for older people, which included a look at how specialist housing provision in England could improve people’s health and wellbeing, and deliver savings in public expenditure.
In exploring the broad issue of housing for older people, and particularly its role in improving health and wellbeing, we urged the committee to consider its location in relation to primary care centres and GP surgery buildings.
With more people living longer and a greater proportion of people living with complex, long-term conditions, reliance on health services is increasing. Primary care is at the heart of moving services, tests and treatment out of hospitals closer to home and in deploying healthcare technology – but must be in the right places and spaces for patients, particularly for older patients who rely on it the most.
