Patients from Newquay Health Centre and Narrowcliff surgery are invited to have their say on plans to replace their existing surgery premises with a new state of-the-art healthcare building in Newquay.
The two practices have been working together for several years to enable them to continue to provide primary care for the current and future population of Newquay and the surrounding area – but the pressures for services caused by their growing patient numbers and lack of physical space are becoming acute.
Both existing surgery buildings have already been modified and extended to help cope with demand, however these changes have reduced the services and parking available to patients, and limited training opportunities for staff.
Dr Stephens, from Narrowcliff Surgery, said: “Both surgeries are undersized for their current patient list size and without a solution this will worsen. There is no more room at either surgery to expand to the extent required”. Because of this, the two Practices have worked together to develop a solution and secure primary care services for Newquay for the future.
Having considered many different premises options, the practices have decided the most suitable solution is to co-locate into a new purpose-built medical centre on a site as close to the centre of Newquay as possible. A new build surgery will enable the practices to provide a wider range of clinical services, improve patient access and parking, increase training facilities and scope for integrated working with other NHS healthcare services, all under one roof.
The preferred location for the new medical centre is on land opposite Tretherras School and the Newquay Community Orchard, on Trevenson Road. The site is at the future centre of Newquay and is large enough to accommodate a surgery built for 42,000 patients plus future expansion space. As part of the wider Nansledan development masterplan, there is also planned improvements to the road infrastructure surrounding the site, including new pedestrian, bus and cycle routes, providing better transport and connectivity to and from other parts of the town.
The new building would provide over 2600m2 of purpose-built clinical and admin accommodation, including light and airy patient waiting areas, new consulting rooms, treatment rooms, training rooms, meeting and administration facilities and the potential for an on-site pharmacy plus space for access to secondary care health services.
There would be approximately 100 car parking spaces and an ambulance bay, plus secured and covered cycle spaces with further offsite public parking available within walking distance. A bespoke, technology-led design will focus on the waiting room to further improve the experience for the patients, and there is also space for future expansion.
Subject to planning permission and final agreement to the project from NHS Kernow, building work will start in 2023 for a 2024 completion.
A public consultation event is taking place on Thursday 28th April, 5:30pm-8pm at Newquay Health Centre or read more and feedback via www.newquaygpnewbuild.com.
Printed information is also available in the current practice buildings.
